Measure and report carbon footprint of a product or product class

Version 1.0
Issue Date: May 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency MSS015021 - Measure and report carbon footprint of a product or product class
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge to determine the carbon footprint of a product or product class across the value chain (which may be internal or external to the enterprise). It includes determining the carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent tonnes and calculating the embodied carbon of a product. This unit applies to the requirement to measure the carbon footprint as part of an enterprise’s regulatory obligation, market or social response or for other purposes. This unit applies to a manager or technical specialist who has a major responsibility for sustainability as part of a broader work role or sustainability may be their primary work responsibility.Skills covered by this unit may be applied individually or in a team context. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

  • Determine total carbon embodied in product

Element: Map carbon sources and sinks along the value chain
  • Select portion of the value chain for analysis

Element: Identify process steps along the chain

Element: Identify the carbon-related change which occurs at each step

Element: Determine nature and source for carbon emissions
  • Determine carbon emissions from each step

Element: Determine source of each emission

Element: Identify measurements available for each emission and each source
  • Quantify each emission

Element: Determine CO2 equivalent tonnes for each emission

Element: Determine total carbon embodied in product

Element: Recommend strategies for reducing carbon footprint
  • Short-list high carbon sources

Element: Determine root cause of emissions

Element: Identify relevant carbon sinks

Element: Investigate methods for reducing emissions

Element: Prepare recommendation for improvement

Element: Report carbon footprint
  • Identify purpose of report and key stakeholders

Element: Compile data, implications and recommendations

Element: Write report and communicate with stakeholders

Submission Requirements

List each assessment task's title, type (eg project, observation/demonstration, essay, assignment, checklist) and due date here

Assessment task 1: [title]      Due date:

(add new lines for each of the assessment tasks)

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Observation Checklist
